Abstract We will give a brief introduction to the Bidomain Equations that describe the electrical activity of cardiac tissue and present new computational techniques for the development and the numerical solution of heart models. In particular, we will discuss the impact of new technologies, such as the Web, Multicore processors and Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) on this particular field of cardiac modeling. A Web-based computational framework that supports cardiac modeling will be presented. The framework is under development and combines a Web Portal, a CellML-based automatic code generator, a parallel Bidomain simulator, and cluster/grid computing. A new parallel algorithm that exploits both data parallelism and pipelining will be presented for the solution of the Bidomain equations. In addition, we will show preliminary results on the use of GPUs for the solutions of the linear systems associated to the discretization of the bidomain equations and some future directions and work under development.
