Abstract: Prions are thought to be the causative agents for fatal diseases as BSE ("mad cow disease") in cattle or the new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in human. In this talk we study a pde-model that describes the dynamics of prion proliferation. Under fairly general assumptions we prove a global existence and uniqueness result for weak solutions using weak compactness methods in $L_1$. Moreover, we also mention results on the asymptotic stability of the disease free steady state.
