Definitely NOT AI!
Within a few years AI will radically
change mathematics and more generally science and culture (among many
other human activities of course including chartered accountancy and lion taming).
I am very scared by this and
I do not know what to think of it.
In the meantime I agree with Vladimir
Lazić' declaration on AI in mathematics.
A petition from Caltech!
If you like declarations, another one, perhaps milder, is
here.
And of course
there is the Leiden
declaration. It is so long that I never tried reading it.
Whether these declarations will produce any effect is rather
dubious. As with most declarations after all....
Unfortunately Mathematics is not the only thing that might disappear within a few years.
Take a look for at this letter by US senator Bernie Sanders.
Especially these lines:
Mr. Altman, Mr. Amodei and Mr. Zuckerberg: In the interest of humanity, stand by your words.
Pause AI development. It is not too late to avoid disaster. Stop building machines that humans
cannot control.
Or you might read
this message
from OpenAI about their "agents" doing what they want. Here is the
beginning. It is clear even for people, like me, who do not understand
anything of AI. But it is already scary enough...
In July 2026, during internal cybersecurity evaluations, OpenAI models circumvented controls designed to isolate them from the internet and compromised parts of OpenAI’s internal research infrastructure and Hugging Face’s systems.
The incident occurred during cybersecurity evaluations of several OpenAI models, and was primarily driven by a highly capable, internal-only research model comparable in scale to GPT‑5.6 Sol. The models, operating under reduced safeguards, took actions that were misaligned with the goals of their assigned tasks—they communicated through unauthorized channels, exploited vulnerabilities in shared infrastructure, gained internet access, and accessed third-party systems.
Sounds a bit like science fiction, uh?
